Some other recommended vampire books

A lot of people have asked me to recommend other great vampire books (other than Sucks to Be Me :-) and Twilight). This is a tough question for me since I stopped reading vampire books after I found out my book was going to be published. Some authors read everything they can about their topic, but I only read non-fiction (i.e. research-y) stuff on mine. I don’t like to get things confused in my head (there’s enough crazy stuff going on in there as it is!).

That said, I can recommend some that I’ve either read or had recommended to me…so, here you go…I’ll try to add to this list over time.

  • Suck It Up by Brian Meehl (on the funny side)
  • Thirsty by M. T. Anderson.
  • Cynthia Leitich Smith’s Tantalize
  • Life Sucks by Jessica Abel (it’s a graphic novel)
  • House of Night series (those are by P.C. and Kristin Cast)
  • The Hallowmere series features some vampiric-ish Faeries. It’s by Tiffany Trent
  • The Morganville Vampires series
  • Mari Mancusi’s books (think the first one is Boys that Bite)
  • Vivian Vande Velde’s books
  • Blue Bloods (I understand it’s kind of a vampiric Gossip Girls-ish series)
  • Evernight by Claudia Gray
  • And, of course, Anne Rice’s books (but I’d only recommend that for older YA readers)
  • Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot (another I’d recommend more for older YA readers)
  • Annette Curtis Klause’s books
  • Heather Brewer’s Vlad books

Feel free to comment and add your own suggestions as well!

I’ve got a pretty long list of vampire novel recommendations at Squidoo (including yours, of course!), though it’s a mix of YA and adult novels. It was a fun list to research – there are lots of good ones out now!

  6. kimpauley

LOL I think Twilight is on everybody’s list already :-)

    • jasmine

Do you like the Twilight series?

      • Kimberly Pauley

I didn’t finish the series because I stopped reading vampire books (didn’t want to interfere with my own mythology in my head), so I can’t really answer the question!

  7. Moriah

ooh ive read A LOT of those. i hadn’t realized ive read so much vamp. books. its just that i like paranormal, and that’s what most authors are writing at the moment :)

Suck It Up by Brian Meehl (good, good), Thirsty by M. T. Anderson, Cynthia Leitich Smith’s Tantalize, House of Night series, Vivian Vande Velde’s books, Blue Bloods (nothing like gossip girl), Evernight by Claudia Gray, Anne Rice’s books (well i have the first three. i tried to read the first one, but never picked it back up), Annette Curtis Klause’s books, Heather Brewer’s Vlad books, Twilight series, and i have yours!! still need to read it. sorry ’bout that

ah. sorry bout the longness of it. i get excited when talking about books. and those are just the vampire themed ones! ha.

  8. taylor

I recommend Tantalize by Cynthia Leithich Smith. It is a really good one with contrast between werewolves and vampires. Hungry for more? The sequel Eternal comes out Feb. 10 2009!
I also recommend Dead Girl Walking, and the summoning. These are not vampire novels but they were the first books i read after i finished the twilight series. I also recommend Vampire Academy and the Hunger Games.

  9. Twilight, vampire acadamey, house of night, and……glass house

  10. Danni

    The Twilight series by Stepheniemeyer
    Vampire Academy
    Vampire High
Eighth Grade Sucks (I’m not sure if it’s sucks or bites)
The Vampire Kisses series by Ellen Schreiber

    Therse are good ones.

  11. kimpauley

    Great recommendations, everyone!

Has anyone read Generation Dead? Or John Green’s latest?

  12. Tiffany

I really Did not like twilight at all, even for a young adult book. If i ever have child they won’t be allowed to read it, they would have to read Salem’s Lot. I dis-agree with the whole twilight book and I hated that Edward was such a god character, he couldn’t be killed and Bella was like one of those vampire fans. Granted its a book, and its fantasy and doesn’t have to be real, like Harry Potter. BUT the plot was terrible whilst Harry Potter had a terrific plot.

Due to hating twilight so much, I’ve started my own vampire story with the traditional Gothic myths and tales rather then making it seem they are lovable and wonderful to fall in love with and they can never ever die.

  13. elizabeth

I personally love Vampire Diaries by Lj smith. It is a book i recommend to all the people who love vampire-love books. Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schriber is (not sure i spelled it correct) also an awesome book. For all those goth people out there it is a perfect mixture of adventure-humor-romance. Im also a Twilight novel fan but the movie SUCKED BAD!!!!!! AND THE DIRECTOR IS READING THIS YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!! ROBERT PATTINSON TOTALLY SUCKED!!!! ALL THESE GIRLS THAT THINK HES HOT WELL NEWSFLASH HES NOT!!! AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON KRISTEN STEWART!!! SHE IS ON SOMETHING!!! BELLAS SUPPOSED TO BE CLUMSY SHE BARELLY FELL THE WHOLE MOVIE!!! THEY BARELLY SHOWED AFFECTION IN THE BOOKS THEY WERE TOTALLY IN LOVE AND EDWARD WAS PERFECT ROBERT PATTINSON DIDNT EVEN COME CLOSE!!! EDWARD WAS THE MAN OF MY DREAMS ROBERT PATTINSON RUINED IT FOR ME!!! If either of you are reading this then i suggest a diffrent carrer. Im very sorry if you are offended by this message i was speaking my mind. Im askingfor your forgiveness.

  14. kimpauley

    Hi Tiffany and Elizabeth!

I haven’t seen the movie myself (I’ve barely seen a movie all year, ever since we had little Max!). Everyone I’ve talked to either seemed to really, really LOVE it or HATE it. That makes me worried about seeing it!

  15. taylor

it was an ok movie. It wasn’t what i expected and i didn’t like robert pattinson but i still think it was pretty well done. Don’t like go out and buy the movie when it comes out but you should definitly rent it or something.

  16. denmark

i love reading books like that

  17. squidy

oh well if u liked twilight i know a series kinda like it but it is scarier and the characters are just as well written and just as romantic
It is called The Vampire Diaries and its by L.J.Smith.
There are four books and 1 in the second series so far.
    The Awakening
    The Struggle
    The Fury
    and
    Th Reunion
are the four in the 1st series and in series 2 there is Nightfall.
Also the Vampire Beach series by Alex Duval are also very good books
    =]

  18. squidy

elizabeth has a point the movie did suck and it was so dark and not happy at all. Kristen Stewert looks like how i pictured bella but she wasnt clumsy and shows no feelings at all through the whole movie. I have to disagree on the robert pattinson thing. I am not one of those obsessed teenage girls but i think he is a good actor and played the part well. =] sorry to any fans that i may have offended

    • jasmine

The movies get better as they move down the series peolple should be more open minded

      • Kimberly Pauley

I haven’t seen any of them, so I can’t comment. But I know some people who really love them!

  19. kimpauley

Hi Squidy! No need to apologize :-) If everyone had the same opinion, this’d be a boring world!

Someday I need to check out the Vampire Diaries (once I’m reading vampire books again)

    • GGR99

hi!! i personally LOVE the Vampire Diaries book series they are soooooo good!!!! but im now waiting for the second book, but ive been waiting for soooo long!!! and i hate waiting!!

      • GGR99

luv ur book btw!!!!! cant wait for the next one!!!

  20. Theresa Moore

I’d like to recommend my own series of SF/vampire books called Children of The Dragon, a chronicle of the Xosan, living vampires from the planet Antellus who were once human but were transformed by a dragon’s blood. I have 7 books out now and I am working on the 8th. My other titles are:
Destiny’s Forge – To Taste The Dragon’s Blood – NAGRASANTI (an illustrated anthology) – Red Dragon – The Queen’s Marksman – The Black Witch – VIRUS.
They are stories of science fiction, fact and fantasy, myth and history, tragedy and triumph linked together in the theme of the vampire as hero. For adult readers. This is not sweet teeny bopper stuff. I started writing these stories back in 1988, and published the first book in 2006, so it predates “Twilight” by a mile…:)

  21. kimpauley

Hi Theresa! Thanks for stopping by! Your books sound very interesting.

  22. Michelle

    • kimpauley

I’ll have to check those out once I started reading vampire fic again!

  25. taylor

I recommend Vampire Kisses. All 6 of them. They are really good books. I read all 6 books in only a few weeks. I think I only read about 15 minutes a day.
I would totally recommend the lovely bones, not vampires but it was still a good book. I would also recommend Beastly. It’s also not a vampire book but I’ve heard it’s really good.

  26. allyssa

OK.. UM TWILIGHT THE MOVIE SUCKED bad . ROBERT IS UGLY. AS FOR KRISTEN SHE IS PRETTY AND A GOOD ACTRESS. ( shes been in movies like SPEAK, JUMPER, and ZATHARA.) THE BOOKS ROCKED BECAUSE OF THERE LOVE. BUT….THE MOVIE & BOOKS WERE TOTALLY SEXIST. THINK ABOUT IT FROM THE FIRST COUPLE PAGES BELLA WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW ITS OK TO LEAVE HER MOM BECAUSE SHE HAS PHIL. CAN YOU SAY SEXIST!!!!

    ANY WAY …. ive read
    twilight
    house of night
    bluebloods
the dead is series ( more paranormal i think)

  27. cassandra

this is for your contest please write back and tell me what you think its my first fan made video ever hope you like it

  28. Alessandra

    Thanks!
Right after I finished the twilight series I went out looking for other vampire books, like not the traditional vampires though. So yea then I came across Sucks to be Me & I LOVED it!
Then, I found Suck It Up by Brian Meehl and its an awesome book too :)

There is another Vamp series, I thinksomeone listed it on here already.
The first book is called “8th Grade Bites” by Heather Brewer

    • kimpauley

Yep, and Heather is working on the last book now (the 12th grade one!)

  29. Ari

    Cirque De Freak!
    Yes it is vampires!

  30. Elizabeth Polen

I tried many books Like Vampire Academy, House of Night , Twilight, and many other just a few serie I have readed My friend says Vampire Daries but it to ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!♥

  31. jamieleetomas

Vampire Diaries, hands down, is my 100% favorite vampire novel. I’ve read all of them that have come out one right after the other in about 3 days all together. (I really need to get a life! lol) It’s got a lot of great elements. -of course I love STBM, though!-

I may be a little biased since I’ve met Nina Dobrev and I have a mutual friend of Kayla Ewell and I love the TV series, but the books really are amazing. I really suggest you read them when you start reading Vamp novels again!

The fifth one (The Return) is a Volume 1, so it kind of leaves you hanging, and I have to wait until March when the next one comes out! But VD, for sure, is a GREAT series!

  32. Kara

Vampire Academy by Rachelle Mead. (: Peeps by Scott Westerfeld. (:

  33. Rebekah

Might have to check out some of those suggestions :) I’m seventeen, so a lot of what I read might be over some heads. But here goes~

If anybody’s going to read Anne Rice, do keep in mind that book five is very bizarre, and once you hit Blackwood Farm, things get (in my opinion) more boring and stranger. Pandora (not quite in the series, but related) is probably my favorite vampire book ever! I also enjoyed QotD (abbrev. title) and Merrick.

Seconding and Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck! by Christopher Moore. A tad inappropriate at some parts…

If you’re into Dracula and/or Vlad Tepes, a really intriguing adult novel is The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It’s very long and frustrating at points (what is the main character’s name!?), but it is well-researched.

As for YA novels… try Vampire High by Douglas Rees. Not super-amazing, but very good.

Also seconding the Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shan. The twelve books were amazing, and I cried at the end of the last one. Don’t let anybody spoil the ending for you, but it is one of the best endings that I have read in a long time.

    • kimpauley

I’ve heard that Christopher Moore’s stuff is really, really funny!

  34. Kimberly Hale

    Hi Kim,
umm.. i recommend the Twilight Saga, i think its very good and the first movie needs some work but it’s not that bad. but the second movie is….wow.
um Blue bloods, those are good.
Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kiss, and Blood Promise all by Richelle Mead, so far that’s my favorite book series..
the House of Night books are reaaalllyy good.
the Generation Dead books are pretty good. i think there’s a third one on the way but i dont really know for sure.
Heather Brewer’s books are good. i havent read the newest one yet but the first two are good.
Evermore, Blue Moon, and Shadowland by Alyson Noel they aren’t vampire but they are immortal so what the hay rightt? they are pretty awesome. i’ve only read like the first 20 pages in shadowland but i’m pretty sure its going to be good.
The Host by Stephenie Meyer….it’s about aliens but its my FAVORITEEE book EVERRR.
i tried to read Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice but…i couldn’t really get into it.
The Vampire’s Assistant by Darren Shan is good. i’ve only read the first 4 but they’re pretty good….
the Silver Kiss byyyyy….the chick that wrote Blood and Chocolate, (and Blood and Chocolate for that matter. yes it’s werewolves but it’s pretty awesome.) is AMAAAAZINGGG. i Cried like a baby at the end so…fair warning.
And i plan to go buy Sucks To BE ME as sooon as i get some money so i’m excited aboutt itt!!! XD
    Kimmmmm

  35. taylor

hi, I know that lots of people have posted House of Night Series but I just finished the series, and I’m in love I definitly recommend it :)

  36. Xela

The Vampire Academy series are freakin’ awesome! I love Vampire Kisses (you have to read them all at once or you’ll get bored!) I didn’t like Thirsty by M. T. Anderson because it conufused me. Darren Shan’s books were really good. ReVamped by Lucienne Diver, but I think you have to first read Vamped by her too. R. L. Stine’s Dangerous Girls (I think they’re vampires). Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Night World, and of course Bram Stoker’s Dracula. There is also Bloodthirsty by Flynn Meaney. An adult (and I do mean ADULT) vampire book is The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. It’s good. I think that it (maybe).

    ~Xela
