What can you tell me about the sequel to Sucks to Be Me?

I’ve had a number of questions about the sequel to Sucks to Be Me, so I thought I’d answer them here :-)

UPDATED 2010

You can find out all about Still Sucks to Be Me on the official page for the book. I’ve kept all of the below information, just in case you wanted a historical records of sorts. :)

UPDATED November 3, 2009

I’ve got an update now that kind makes a lot of the below out of date, but I’ll leave it up for posterity’s sake. :-)

Still Sucks to Be Me has gone through revisions and copy editing and is now in the typesetting phase of preparation. The next step will be Advanced Reader Copies. Woot! The release date was moved up from September 2010 to May 11, 2010. Double Woot!!

I saw an early version of the cover, but it’s been changed since I saw it. I’ll share it (as well as the first chapter, etc.) as soon as I can.

I will have tons of fun stuff going on around the launch, so keep a lookout starting in January (there’s gonna be one really special contest that will kick off around then).

UPDATE! April 20, 2009

Okay, I have an official update! The sequel to Sucks to Be Me is officially under contract now. I’m supposed to finish up this draft and get it to my editor around June. However, it won’t actually be out in stores until next year (sorry, guys, publishing is slow! There’s all kinds of stuff to do — editing, designing the cover and chapter heads, typesetting-y stuff, etc.). From what I understand, there will be some kind of teaser or excerpt of the second book included in the paperback release of Sucks to Be Me (which will be out in August). So, yay! :-)

What’s the title of the sequel?

Right now, I’m calling it It Still Sucks to Be Me: More All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton Smith. That’s not final, but pretty likely.

When is it going to come out?

No idea as of yet, especially since I’m still working on it :-) Heck, you can even leave me suggestions here, if you’d like. Can’t promise that I’ll take any of them, but who knows. I’m definitely using some of the character names that were suggested in the Launch Party contest. Also, the publisher is waiting to see how the first book does (that’s just reality for a first-time author), so they probably won’t know until Spring when paperback orders (it’ll come out in paper next year) start coming in. So please do tell your friends about the book — you may not think so, but YOU can make a difference to first-time (heck, any-time) authors. So far the book seems to be doing pretty well, but (from what I understand) it’s sustained sales that excite the publisher. ;-) Oh, and please do review it on Amazon and B&N or wherever else! That stuff really does help!

Is Raven in it? Do we find out what happened to her?

Yep, Raven is in it. And here’s where you guys have already made a difference — originally, my plot for the second book didn’t really call for her. But so many of you asked about her that it started me thinking…and I came up with a nice plot twist that includes her…actually, she’s integral to the plot now.

Is Aubrey in it? Do we find out what happened to him?

Aubrey is definitely mentioned. That’s all I’ll say about that.

Is Serena in it? George?

Yep and yep.

Why is it taking soooo lonnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggg???

Well, mostly because of my little peanut boy Max. He’s 8 months old now and into EVERYTHING! But also because I’m still running YA Books Central (which takes up chunks of time). But it is coming along pretty good and I’m happy with how it is going.

  2. Ezra

so did Raven become a vamp in a diffent class or did she get her mimery wiped like Aubrey?

  3. kimpauley

Hmmmm, I’m afraid I can’t answer that second question…you’ll just have to wait for the next book. :-)

  4. Ezra

i kinda of thought so but thought i try….

  5. Elaine

I am so excited!!! Do you think there will be a third book?? :-)

  6. kimpauley

I’ve actually got the outlines for 4 books total. I hope I get the chance to write them all! (Be sure to tell your friends about the first book!) And I’m going to post a new contest today too… :-)

  7. sammy

I just want to see how Mina and george are doing, I think theyère too cute!

  8. Diana

Woo more Mina and George. I love them. George woo! I can’t wait to hear more about Serena and her relationship with now or maybe dead Mina. I’m excited and I can’t wait until the sequel. If the sequel doesn’t get publish (crossing my fingers that it does get published) will you post it up on your website for us to read?

  9. Ezra

i cant wate for nomber 2 and you want 4. YAY thats so great

  10. Ezra

i got a qustion on the whole parant thing.. in the book it says Mina’s mom puts gray in hair to look like the mom, so now that she changed is it gonna help now sence she wont get older now? or do they have to be like sister’s cuse they wated so long?

  11. kimpauley

Diana — well, we’ll see if it comes to that point. :-) If people keep telling their friends about it and word gets around, then it should get published the “normal” way :-)

    Ezra — can’t tell ya! It’d give something away…

  12. Alissa

I got the book yesterday for Christmas! I’m already done! I absolutely adore it! I can’t wait for the second book!!

    Keep writing!

    -Alissa

P.S. I just thought you’d like to know that your book as inspired me to write a story. I’m so glad I read your book; it got me into a writing a very interesting, fun story! Look for my book on the shelves by 2020! Then I’ll be about 23, but hopefully I can get my book published around the time I’m 18 years old.

  13. Alissa

I can’t wait so see how Mina and George’s relationship is going! And Serena and Nathan’s! And Mina and Serena’s! I hope that Mina and Serena are still able to be friends even though Mina turned :)

  14. Alissa

Also: Do you use WordPress for everything? I’m jjust curious since, along with my writing and drawing, I’m a graphic designer and website designer :D

  15. Elaine

I had asked for the House of Night Series for Christmas and got them!!! Then I began reading them that night since I celebrate it on the 24th. Just this morning I finished reading them and I cannot wait for the fifth one Hunted!!! One of my friends does not read much and when I told her about yours and about how funny and awesome it is she asked if she could borrow it. And of course I want her to know about yours and so she read it and she loved it and we always talk about it, and I told her that there will probably be a sequel and she started freaking out. Then her and I talked about it some more and how much we want to see it be published and we were all excited. Her and I really want to see it be published and we are just so excited!!! Sorry this is so long!..
Thanks and I really want it to be published.

  16. kimpauley

Hi Alissa — good luck with your story! And I’m glad you liked the book so much! I use WordPress for this site since I needed to get it together quickly. I actually used to be a web designer (and a UI Development Manager) and I program my own stuff (or, at least, I used to), like over at http://www.yabookscentral.com I try not to program much anymore though, if I can help it!

Elaine — LOL, me too! I’m sure you’ll enjoy all the House of Night books too. I’ve heard great things about them.

  17. Sam

I aslo got a House of NIght book, and I’m proud to say that “Sucks to be Me” has got me reading again. Thank You!!! I LOVED your book and can’t wait for the next.

    ~Sam

P.S. I was wondering if you thought of making your book/books into a film.I think they would make a wonderful movie, and my friend, the one who told me about your book, totally agrees with me. My first thought was to make the movie ourselves, then I realized theres not enough people. But anyways Thanks again!

  18. emma ryans

I am decidng what I want as a career. I read in sucks to be me that mina also has to decide what she wants to do for a living. I would like your advice. I think I would be great as a bloodsucking lawyer ( mortal Lawyer) or a dermatalogist maybe even a undercover spy and work for the government. I like courts and laws and I also like shooting its pretty cool, the stunts. But being a dermatologist is calm and helpful and your patients take your advice. I much of a get to the point girl. So please let me know.

  19. kimpauley

Hi Sam! I’d had some people contact me about buying the film/tv rights, but no news really as of yet on that. That’s pretty much how it works — a company buys the rights and then either makes (or doesn’t make) a show or movie out of it. The author doesn’t really get much say in the matter (well, unless they are huge like J. K. Rowling!) If you do make any kind of movie, let me know! I’d LOVE to see it!

Hi Emma. Well, those are some wildly different career choices! My best advice, actually, is to get to college and take some general classes and see what really interests you then. People tend to change their minds a lot once they start at University (I know I did…I thought I was going to major in Physics (ack!) or maybe Journalism/Television Production and I wound up getting a degree in English). You also might want to find people in those careers and see if they’ll let you shadow them for a day or two, so you can really see what it is like.

  20. taylor

    Hey!
I Love Love Love Love this book!! I got it for Christmas and I’m already done. It didn’t even take me a full day! I can’t wait to read the sequel. Will Nathan be in it??
I am writing a book myself. I don’t really like it so far. Do you suggest I just write the whole thing and then judge whether i like it or not?

  21. kimpauley

Hi Taylor! Well, if you *really* don’t like it, I’d move on to something else. Because writing *should* be fun (even when it is your job). But, if you’re just wishy-washy about it, go ahead and finish it. Always remember that first drafts can be messy. REALLY messy and it it’s okay. :-)

  22. Trinica

Wow, I can’t wait to read the sequel, and hopefully other books that come after it! I’ve already told my friends about the book, so they’re really excited to read it. Good luck!

  23. Moriah

i started writing a book, too. well the first 5000 words were very fun, but then it just kinda got awkward… I wrote all that in a couple hours. i have no idea where it’s going to go, though. i’m back in school today, so i’ll probably just take a break from it for a week, and maybe think of a new plot twist.
The problem with writing is that i read WAY too much. and then i get all these ideas from other authors, but i want to be original…. a couple years ago i wanted to write a vampire novel, but now there are way too many on that subject (hey… i like to be different). i may write a short vampire story, though.

Hmm… my step nephew is 11 months now. He doesn’t get into stuff, though. just kinda sits there and stares at you most of the time. Well, that and he climbs the stairs. I keep thinking something might be wrong with him, but I’m not going to tell my step sister that. xD

  24. kimpauley

Hey Trinica — thanks! The more people that know about it, the better! :-) It really does make a difference!

Moriah — you might try outlining. That really helps me. It doesn’t have to be too extensive, just some notes about where you’re going with the story. And every kid is different. We just happen to have a mover and a shaker. He never sits still!

  25. Nia H.

Hey…I LOVE your book it was so good. I hope(cross my fingers and hope to die) that there will be a sequal. I told about all of my frinds about your book and three of them went out and bought it(one was reading it in science classs…ha ha ha). My sisters read the book to (but they didn’t go out and buy it, because we live in the same house) adn they really liked it….a lot. I sisn’t really need to tell you all of that…but I couldn’t help myself! :)

    ~Nia

  26. kimpauley

Hi Nia! Thanks! Every reader counts! (in more ways than one!)

  27. taylor

Can you maybe give us a time frame of when it may be out in stores? Like if it will be out this year or in the winter next year or whenever it might be released? That would really help. I need to know how long I have to wait. I need to prepare myself. lol thats how much i want this sequel

  28. Claire

Can’t wait! I just read/reviewed SUCKS TO BE ME on my blog and loved it! Hurray!

  29. Danni

OMG!!! I have read soo many vamire books and I read yours and its a new twist on them and it’s GREAT!!!

  30. kale

I hope you get to write those other books I just feel incomplete. It’s like I’ve been setup and I’m waiting for the fall to begin, and that would truly suck if the story ended here. I was getting to the end of the book wondering if Raven was going to attack Mina at prom with her black talon crew, but the end of the book really turned into the beginning of your story.

I was kinda hoping Nathan was a vampire I mean he’s not really into the in crowd, he’s already hot, has the right taste in movies, his parents weren’t around in the first book….. or the council did something more sinister to Aubrey than erasing his memory…. and I was thinking maybe the disappointment of finding his whole world built on smoke turned him into a Van Helsing….. or Raven just claimed him as a love slave, and of course Mina has some super mental vamp abilities.

I really liked the truth and myth maybe in a future book you can do a fantasy vs. reality as in what mina imagined certain aspects would be like just to find her preconceptions were completely wrong, like I love that in her pro vamp list she wrote good bye period but what if in reality she hit vampire menopause…. I know I’m evil.

  31. kimpauley

I still don’t have any timeframe, though I hope to know more soon. Publishing can be a slow business! :) And thanks for the review, Claire!

Kale, A lot of your questions get answered…though perhaps not in exactly in the way that you might think! (I think that’s a good thing though…if things were exactly like what you would expect, what would be the fun in that??) You definitely will find out what happened to Raven and Aubrey in the second book. There was originally a bit more about them in the first one, but it wound up being cut because of flow issues. Probably a good thing though, since what happened to ‘em “changed”…

  32. naniWHOlovesGEORGE

heylllo mrs. pauley i am thirteen years old and want to publish a book its deccent sized and im working on finalizing it how can i get it published??

oh and you should have somebody turn evil like….lorelei she was nice and everything .

  33. naniWHOlovesGEORGE

oh and nathan should definatly turn

  34. kimpauley

Well, for starters, (if you feel your story is ready) you ought to check out things like Writer’s Digest and do some research on publishers and agents that might be interested in it. If you feel it still needs some polishing, you should check out writer’s groups and critique groups or even talk to your English teacher to make sure the story is the best it can be!

In the second book there is going to be someone that seems nice…but maybe isn’t so nice…but I won’t say who!

  35. taylor

Omg! I read the book again and I still could get over Nathan. I love him so much. I could picture him looking like Zac Efron :P

    • Pia

wtf Zac Efron are you kidding me!

  36. kimpauley

Oh yeah, Zac could totally be Nathan! :-)

  37. jessica

OMG!! i loved this book! if they make a movie for it i would soooo go see it!!!
it would be cool if mina became friends with another vampire and he/she was part of the black talons!! did i mention your book is better than twilight!!!!

  38. kimpauley

Jessica — Thanks, I take that as a HUGE compliment!

  39. anna

i love your book alot and i was wondering if you can post a sample of your the second book on the internet. CANT WAIT!!!!

ps>>>in the book is it gonna include the club that raven was talking about?

  40. kimpauley

Hi Anna, that’s a good question. You know what, I’ll check with my publisher. I’m not sure if I’m allowed or not.

And all I’ll say is that Ravel figures heavily in the next book, causing lots of trouble as per usual. :)

  41. sammie

o my gosh you are already making a new book?!?! that is soo cool cant wait to read it :)

  42. sammie

I really,REALLY cant wait to read your next book! I hope it will be done soon :D

  43. Pia

How many books are you planning to write about Mina?

P.S, i got through your book in one sitting.
P.S.s, thats pretty good cause i am only 10

    • kimpauley

Wellllllll….two definitely. Though I have outlines for 4 at the moment. Not sure if they’ll all wind up getting written or not. It’ll depend on how well the next one sells, I imagine!

  44. bella(no more twilight comments)

Hello I adooored your book and in the sequel I think it would be cool if serena turn turned or the council or even the black talons found out that mina kept up communication with her and erased her entire memory of their friendship(council) or worse(black talon) and your book is a lot better than twilight. oh and any advice I write in spare time but every one says I should get published any advice?

  45. sammie

hey kimpauley do you have a date in june it will come out at? xD :)

    • kimpauley

Oooh, sorry, I guess that was kind of confusing. I have to get it to my editor by June. Then it’s got all the other stuff to go through (like editing and design). They aren’t planning on releasing it until next year, probably in August. :(

  46. HaileyAlize

OH MY Goddd I love Ur Book !!!!!!! Sucks to be me is sooo Goodd.

  48. Ayoumi

Oh my gods! I loove Mina and George! I cannot wait for the sequel and when I found out there was going to be a sequel I just freaked out!!!!!! Your writing is sooo funny and awesome, once again – I cannot wait for the sequel!!!!!!

one question: will mina and george get married? (like in the future because you say you have an outline for 4 more books)

    • kimpauley

Hi Melissa! Welllllllllll, I can’t really say. Some things happened in book 2 that changed my original outlines for the other books. So we’ll have to see! And, of course, book 2 has to do well enough for the publisher to want book 3 and so on! :-)

  50. breetee

omg! i lovedddddddddddddddddddddd ur book! i can’t w8 for the 2 one!!!!! … but r you going to sart the 2nd one out where the firzt left off like on the beach or will it skip like a couple of weeks?? because i can’t w8 to c wat the whole school, mostly just serry(serena, dnt ask why i call her that i just ddo XP) and nathan think about how she looks because when they say george they didnt seem to notice anything was differnt besides that he looked like he had been working out, but how could he have got that much muscle in like a day? or did he not change as much as i thought he did? .. sorry if u think i’m being rude, but im not just curiouse…. oh and i sent a mass txt through my fone telling them they need to get a copy of you’re book ^.^ ….. i really did love it! hope you the best of luck with the 2nd one!! can’t w8 to read it!!!!!! XD

    • kimpauley

Hi breetee! The second one starts off a couple of months after the first one ends. :-)

The “changes” go on for a while after a turning. There are some immediate ones (like the eye color and some muscle tone, which is partly just a change to the underlying musculature of the person/vampire) and then others that take a while to finish (internal stuff mostly). Mostly, if you saw a single vampire out and about, they wouldn’t necessarily stand out to you. You might think “oh, hey, he’s in shape” or “what cool eyes she has” but your first thought wouldn’t be “ooooooh, vampire” Now, if you get a bunch in a group, you might start wondering what’s up…
