This continues the series of behind the scenes posts for Cat Girl’s Day Off. Freddy’s Day Off is the name of the movie being filmed at Nat’s high school. Besides appearing as an extra, she and her friends crash movie sets at Wrigley Field. I wrote out two scenes of the movie for the book, but wound up only using one of them (though this one is indirectly referenced). It takes place in the cafeteria of Nat’s high school. Ty McKenzie plays Freddy Barnes and Victoria Welling plays Molly. The movie (kinda obviously) is about a teenage guy that wants to change his life and figures the best way to do it is to emulate Ferris Bueller.

FADE IN:

CAFETERIA SCENE

High school cafeteria. Freddy and Molly are sitting at a cafeteria table with their trays in front of them.

FREDDY

I’m going to do it.

MOLLY

Do what?

Trina and Rose, two pretty girls, walk by the table behind Freddy to go sit at another table filled with the popular crowd. Freddy turns to look at them, then leans over to look intently into Molly’s eyes.

FREDDY

Do something about my life, that’s what!

Trina is never going to notice me. No one is ever going to notice me. Unless I do something. Something big.

MOLLY

Like what?

FREDDY

Remember that old movie we watched last weekend? The one about Ferris Bueller?

MOLLY

Yeah?

FREDDY

That’s what I’m going to do.

MOLLY

Skip school?

FREDDY

No! I mean, yes. But not just skip school. I want to be Ferris.

MOLLY

You want to be in a movie?

FREDDY

No, that’s not what I mean. I mean I want to be like Ferris. You do realize that movie was filmed in this school, right? In this very school?

MOLLY

Yeah. So? So was part of The Breakfast Club. Wasn’t that film by the same guy? You want to get sent to detention too?

FREDDY

Molly, you’re not getting it. Of course I don’t want to get detention.

MOLLY

You just said you want to skip school. What do you think that will get you?

FREDDY

(sighs) Okay, it might wind up with me in detention. But it’ll be worth it. I’m going to do everything that Ferris did. Everything.

MOLLY

You have a friend somewhere I don’t know about that owns a Ferrari you can destroy?

FREDDY

No! Molly! Just…you know, everything else. All the good stuff. Like the museum and crashing that fancy restaurant.

MOLLY

Oh, yeah, skipping school to go to a museum is sure to get you noticed by Trina. You’re such a bad boy, Freddy.

Molly stands up and picks up her tray and Freddy follows suit. They carry their trays to the window to turn them in.

FREDDY

You’re totally missing the point, Molly. Come on, this is going to be awesome. Tomorrow could be the best day of my entire life.

MOLLY

You’re going to skip tomorrow? Don’t we have a test in Chem?

FREDDY

Forget Chemistry. This is more important. I want you to come with me, Molly.

Molly pauses.

MOLLY

You want me to come with you? Like that girl in the movie? Sloan or whatever her name was? Ferris’s girl friend?

FREDDY

Yeah, kind of. I mean, you’re my best friend. Ferris took his two best friends with him. It wouldn’t be right if I just went by myself.

MOLLY

Right.

FREDDY

And, um, do you think you could borrow your dad’s car?
