So, I say stuff about writing through writer’s block…

…over here on the Omnivoracious blog, along with Bruce Cordell and Paul Kemp.

How do you get through Writer’s Block? Is there any such thing? Or is it just a bogeyman myth to frighten writers? ;)

Who's a pretty bird?

In other news, Happy (American) Thanksgiving! It was strange celebrating it over here in the UK since they don’t have the holiday (really — it goes right to Christmas here as far as decorations and holiday stuff).

But we did the whole thing here in our flat — turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, saying thanks… I do love this holiday. It’s not about taking (other than taking another helping), it’s about thanking and appreciating.

We’ve also got up our Christmas tree now and it’s starting to feel real joyful around here. Happy everything to you and yours!

This. And you thought cats weren’t sneaky…

Design my next bookplate and WIN!

So, I ran out of bookplates. Which isn’t a terrible tragedy, as I used to use Avery labels and just make my own whenever I needed more. But I thought that this time it might be nice to get some made and have ‘em all be shiny and new and things like that. You know. I’ve been mucking around with possible ideas (and still have a few), but then I had a BIG idea.

Ninja Max says: "Ideas, they are my favorite!"

Would YOU like to design my next bookplate? And win something cool if your design is chosen? You would, wouldn’t you? C’mon, you know you do.

The Details

What’ll the winner win? An ultra-special copy of Still Sucks to Be Me. A marked up copy. With margin notes from me and little details and snippets and things like that. A one-of-a-kind thing. And signed, of course. And some book swag. And your name up in lights on my website. Okay, maybe not lights. Pixels. (Or, if you’d rather wait until next year, I’ll give you a marked up copy of Cat Girl’s Day Off. Your choice.)

Whaddaya gotta do? Design a bookplate using the specificiations below and email me your design in either jpg or png format by November 15th, 2011.

The Specifications

  • Dimensions (for printing) are 90 mm x 55 mm, however this means the artwork should actually be 96mm x 61mm (basically, extra padding around the outside…but if you just do the 90 x 55, that’s fine, I can add the padding).
  • 300 dpi (if you don’t know what that means, don’t worry overly much)
  • Include (somewhere) my name (Kimberly Pauley) and my URL (www.kimberlypauley.com)
  • Preferably, the bookplate would be generic (i.e. not specific to the Sucks to Be Me books or the Cat Girl’s Day Off book) so I can use it for any of my books
  • Any images used need to be your own design or you must have permission to use them
  • You need to leave space so I can actually, um, sign them and maybe write messages to people (or at least their name)

This is one design I was playing with which is actually based on a fan’s drawing of me from a workshop I gave a few years back. It’s pretty simple. Feedback on Twitter, however, was that “she” (me) looked tired and not very happy. So, um, yeah. Hence this contest…(though if you like it, let me know)

And the winner of the T-shirt is… @that_cool_girl !

It’s that time again! I’ve passed 2000 followers and I get to give away a t-shirt! Congrats to Hannah-Beth @that_cool_girl the winner of a Sucks to Be Me t-shirt of her choosing (Hannah-Beth, just email me what size, color and design you want + your address)! Woot!

Next t-shirt will be given away at 2500 followers…(right now I’m at 2114 so if you’re not following me yet, get going!)

Extra Points Opportunity #2 for the iPad Giveaway!

Here’s another chance for you to earn extra points/entries towards the iPad I’m giving away at the end of October (and if you haven’t entered already, um, why??)!

The last opportunity (500 points!) was for buying a copy of one of my books during the contest period. This one’s for people who already have a copy of either (or both) of my books. Because I love you guys. Seriously. I want to hug and squeeze you and call you George. That’s how much I love my readers.

Anyway. Moving on before someone calls the stalker police.

To earn this extra points opportunity you have to:

  1. Take a picture of yourself with one of my books (either one). Preferably looking, you know, happy and not constipated or anything.
  2. Make that picture your Facebook or Twitter profile picture. Not permanently or anything, but longer than a day would be great :)
  3. E-mail me at kim at kimberlypauley dot com with the link to your profile/wall so I can verify it.
  4. Important! Include your contest username in the email so I know who to award the points to!! And please send it by October 30th to give me time to award the extra points!

And that’s it! Bazinga! You get 50 extra points!

A Poem for Tabitha @TabithaMichelle

And lastly, my third promised poem to Tabitha Michelle, the “Bodacious” book blogger who, I have to admit, I don’t know well either, but…here goes.

You remind me of me

A long time ago (longer, perhaps, than I care to admit),
I was you.

No, really.

I was that teenage girl who loved books–
(and big words, bodacious being one of them…
it trips so well off the tongue)
and found myself in them
sometimes more than I found myself in me.

I wrote poetry
and read
did things with my friends
and read
sometimes avoided my family
and read
went to school
and…snuck books to read

Always, always, the books,
the stories, the characters, the pages…

turning, turning, turning

Someday, I hope you see a girl
who reminds you of you

…and makes you smile.

A Poem for Christina @clabahr

This poem is a little tougher since I don’t really know anything about Christina other than that she’s a) on Twitter and b) apparently likes cats (like the Cheshire cat). So, um.

I Don’t Know You

I don’t know you,
and you don’t know me.

That’s the beauty of the Internet, isn’t it?

Here we are, two strangers,
colliding, connecting
over twitter handles and hashtags

Two bits in cyberspace
running into each other out of nowhere
and forging a connection
however tenuous or small

It’s a virtual tea time,
minus the scones.

So, let’s have a chat.

You want to talk cats?

A Poem for Gordon @MuffinTruck

I promised three poems yesterday to people who commented on my new website on Twitter (see, people, you should be following me over there…not only can you win a t-shirt, you can get a custom poem all for yourself…I am totally a full service authoress). Here is the poem for Gordon (@MuffinTruck):

Gordon

There’s this librarian I know—
you might have seen him…
can’t miss him, really.

He’s the tall one over there,
with the glasses
and the
slightly unruly hair…
and the always ready smile
framed in a rather glorious mustache.

Can’t miss that, can you?

And you definitely can’t miss
how much he likes…no, loves
Books.

(hey, he is a librarian)

…but it’s not only the reading he loves, but the sharing of books
with the local teens, who come slouching or sauntering or shouting
into the library, caught up in their own world and drama and details
to suddenly be mesmerized and entertained and captivated

with books.

Yes, you can’t miss that.

Welcome to my new website! (and other news)

So, did you notice anything different? I finally launched my new website! Hope you like it. Notice the pink cat? (Pssstttt….newsletter subscribers will find out why that cat is pink first…) Take a look around and tell me what you think!

You’ll notice I’ve created a new section called Giveaways and Cool Stuff. That’s where you’ll find contests as well as instructions on how to get FREE ahem signed bookplates and temporary tattoos, as well as find out where you could order a Sucks to Be Me T-shirt (and help out an awesome literacy charity at the same time).

Dressing the world in Vampire Squirrels, one fan at a time

Speaking of T-shirts, I hit 1500 followers over on Twitter and have given away my first T-shirt for the Twitter T-Shirt Giveaway! Woot! The shirt went to @PageTurnersBlog and she chose the Vampire Squirrel in navy. Good choice. Can’t wait to see a picture of it!!

The next shirt will be given away at 2000 followers, so get following if you haven’t already!!

There are going to be some really BIG giveaways and promotions coming up, so stay tuned. I’ve got some big plans and I’m very excited!

CroatianIn other news, I found out from a fan in Croatia that, apparently, Sucks to Be Me will be coming out in Croatian soon! I actually signed the contract on that eons ago and hadn’t heard anything else about it, so I wasn’t sure what was going on. Very exciting. They did a cover very similar to the Spanish cover. What do you think? I like it! Can’t wait to see it in person!

The reader said it basically translates as “I Hate to Be Me” which is a pretty good translation, all in all. That was one thing I hadn’t thought of with the title in English — how it translates to other languages!

In personal news, Max had his Harvest Festival today. He was adorable, as per usual. He did pretty good reciting the poem with his class, though he forgot to keep talking towards the end and just did the hand motions. Still, awesome first performance from the little guy!

So, The @guardianbookswap Exercise was a Success!

Yesterday kicked off a huge bookswap sponsored by The Guardian. They have these bookplates you put in books and then you drop them off in public so people can find them (and yeah, it is a similar concept to some other sites and events).  I thought it would be fun to participate (and I might do it again!).

I dropped off a copy of Still Sucks to Be Me at Lush on Portobello Road because, well, it’s one of the stores that always seems to have a fairly constant stream of teenagers in it. Especially teenage girls, but hey, it’s a bath bomb and soap store. I stuck it right under a Try Me sign. I hope someone found it!

And I dropped off another book at Cafe Garcia, also on Portobello Road. It’s a great little cafe attached to a Spanish market that we shop at all the time. Since I was dropping off a Spanish translation, I figured it was a good spot to try it out at — at least there it would have a chance of someone finding it that could speak the language!

The waitress caught me here so I had to explain that I was leaving it on purpose. I would make a terrible spy, obviously. I tried to be all surreptitious and things by buying a little muffin and sitting for a minute, but it didn’t quite work out. Anyway, someone on Twitter told me they were in Cafe Garcia and saw someone with my book in hand, so that’s a good sign! I hope they enjoy it too.

Yay books! Yay readers!

Winners of the Custom Short Story Contest…

Hey! The Max has picked the winners for the Still Sucks to Be Me short story contest! I did it the old fashioned way this time…I put everyone’s name on a slip of paper (additional slips for any extra entries), mixed them up, put them in a bowl, had The Max close his eyes and then pick out the winners.

So.

I am SUPER excited to announce that the grand prize winner of the contest is Astrid! Woot! And what a cool name!

Astrid!

So, I’ll be sending off a questionnaire to Astrid for her to complete and then I can figure out what I’m gonna write about! No idea yet…

Now then…the second prize T-shirt goes to…Loic! I wonder which one he’ll pick…

And because I love ya’ll (look, I said ya’ll…I must be channeling Myra McEntire), EVERYONE who entered this contest gets a consolation prize (Signed bookplate & an assortment of Sucks to Be Me and Still Sucks to Be Me temporary tattoos). So if you entered this one, check your email for details.

Congrats to everyone!! And thank YOU so much!

PS If possible, I’ll be working some of the other entrant’s names into the story as well…we’ll see…probably just in passing, but you never know!
