Sneak Peek Continued…Oscar!

Okay, so my editor and I were randomly tweeting back and forth today and she happened to mention Jang Geun-Seok. So I looked him up (thank you, Google image search) and I have found Oscar!!!

Seriously! He’s perfect. Okay, so he’s South Korean and not half-Japanese and he’s twenty-four in real life, but other than that, PERFECT. Totally has the right attitude.

Okay, and he’d need his bangs/fringe (over here in the UK they call bangs “fringe”, yet another thing to get used to…go to a salon and say you need your bangs trimmed and they will look at you like you grew another head) to be green.  But other than that, seriously, this dude is totally Oscar (click through to embiggen if you like).

Disclaimery bit: I don’t own any of those photos or have any rights to ‘em or anything like that. Don’t know the dude at all. Just think he’s exactly awesomesauce for Oscar. And if he’s anywhere near as cool as Oscar is in my head, then he’s totally AWESOME.

Don’t forget to check out all the Sneak Peeks!

I’m itching to write that Sucks to Be Me short story with Mina and YOU!

Entries are trickling in for the Still Sucks to Be Me paperback launch contest where you can enter to win a spot in a custom short story featuring YOU in all your glory and Mina (and friends). I’m really excited about it! I can’t wait to write the story. It’s actually great to have photos of the people who have entered because it will be a huge help when writing the story as well…and I’ve got no idea what’s going into the short story yet!

I am thinking of the questions that I’ll be asking though…

Remember to enter by July 31, 2011!!!

Here’s the latest entry:

Good luck!

On Paris, interviews in Spanish, and paperback books (and a reminder about the short story contest)

First off, I did a little Q&A with my Spanish publisher, Versatil. You can check it out in Spanish and English :) I am pleased to say that I can actually (mostly) read the translated Spanish version…my Spanish is rusty, but still there!

And I’m doubly pleased to announce that the paperback version of Still Sucks to Be Me is now out (in English…the Spanish paperback has been out for awhile)! Just a reminder, if you haven’t entered already, you can enter to win a spot in a short story featuring YOU and Mina!

And lastly, in bookish news, the French translation is in progress right now. Which I think is quite cool. Très bon!

Rach and The Max At Trafalgar Square

In personal news, my niece Rachael (she was the one mentioned in Sucks to Be Me in the dedication section) is here in London visiting with us for 3 weeks as a graduation present. The Max is having a blast, of course. He loves his cousins! She got here on the 3rd of July. I can’t believe how fast time has flown!

We started off with a bit of a whirlwind tour around the Thames and things like that, then we went to Paris (PARIS!) for four days. It was our first time in France too, so that was lots of fun. We stayed in a little apartment in Montmartre (thanks to Lisa Yee for telling me about VRBO), which was where the movie Amelie was filmed and where the Moulin Rouge is. Not to mention the Basilica Sacre Coeur.

On the Seine

Which has a LOT of steps to climb to get to the top of the dome.

A lot.

We also took The Max to Disney Paris, which I can’t even describe to you how much he enjoyed. I know he may not remember this trip later in life since he’s only three, but I can tell you that it brought him much joy. His very first Disney ride was on Pirates of the Caribbean, which he actually found a little too scary (oops) but has since turned into a very elaborate story of how he beat up the pirates and stole three gold pieces from them. We also did Dumbo, Alice’s Curious Labyrinth, a Buzz Lightyear ride (wherein he got  a blaster and was very joyous), It’s a Small World, Pinocchio (fastest ride EVER), a Tarzan show (very cool), saw a parade, ate some incredibly overpriced but yucky hamburgers and  some really good food at a restaurant in Pirates of the Caribbean. Overall, an exhausting but exhilarating day.

Evil Robots and Aliens Beware

Then, of course, we did a boat tour down the Seine and walked along the Champs-Élysées, saw Notre Dame, went on the Eiffel Tower, walked the city, experienced the metro (ack…I so much more appreciate the tube in London now), met some nice French people, met some rude French people…basically, all the obligatory things you do when you go to Paris for the first time. Oh, and we ate lots of baguettes and pain chocolat.

Since we’ve been back in London, we’ve been to Spitalfields Market, Petticoat Lane Market and the Sunday Up Market. And Kensington Palace with tea at the Orangery, Hyde Park (complete with boating on the Serpentine), the Westfield Mall, the Tower of London, Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, Chinatown…it’s been a whirlwind. Today we’re probably just going to Portobello Market. I say “just” because it’s right where we live, so no journey required. :)

Anyway, having fun, wish you were here!

This is what a yard is for

We had grass put into our (well, our landlady Clem’s) backyard here in London and had all the rocks removed because, well, when you have a three year old, they need grass. This is why:

Sprinkler Time

Pure joy.

Lego Light

We have created a Lego monster. No lie. The Max is the king of Legos. His reward for making it two weeks with no potty training accidents was a big Lego set (he chose a Star Wars Jar Jar Binks set + a Clone Trooper Speeder set).

So I had the bright idea (ha) a few weeks ago that it would be cool to make him a light out of Legos. I looked online and saw some examples and even a few you could buy, but ultimately decided to just try my (our) own hands at it.

We tried with regular sized Legos first, but we didn’t have enough. We’ve mostly got sets (Kingdom ones or Star Wars ones) and I wasn’t about to break a set to make the light. Heck, it took Tony three hours to put the big castle together. So yesterday the light went on (ha) and I realized we had all these Lego Duplo blocks that he only plays with occasionally since he started getting into “real” Legos.

So this is what we came up with. The beauty of it is that you can always remake it again later if you want. Our first try was a lot smaller and not quite as interactive.

Hanging out with Victoria @veschwab

So, I had my FIRST visitor since we moved to the UK (well, other than people my husband knows from work) and la! it was Victoria Schwab, a fellow YA writer! She’s on her way home to the States right now (literally, I think her plane just took off), but I got to take her around Portobello Road and show her my flat and all of that yesterday. It was great to visit with her and I’m super excited about her books (The Near Witch, which comes out soon but also especially her next book after that which sounds very amazing and right up my alley).

We had a bit of lunch at Kitchen & Pantry and then mostly walked, stopping off in some bookshops along the way. Oh, and Hummingbird Bakery for cupcakes. The basement of the Comic / Book Exchange up near Notting Hill Gate is particularly dangerous…all the books down there are only 50p (50 pence).Victoria managed to walk away with only one slim volume (she was already out of room in her luggage), but I wound up getting around 10 books for me and The Max.

It was great to visit with another writer for a while. It’s so nice to have a conversation where the other person actually understands what you’re talking about. :)

The Max and Mommy rocking tattoos

The Max and I are rocking some Sucks to Be Me tattoos today. World, be prepared.

I be cool.
Look, Ma, we match!

And, yeah, if you want some (also have batty), you can email me and tell me. Signed bookplates too. You’ll need to tell me your address too, of course.

On weddings, opera, cute little boys, and synopsis-izing

Haven’t blogged for a few days, mostly because I’ve been sick. Yeah, that’s not news…I’ve been sick for an entire FREAKING month. Yesterday though, I seem to have added food poisoning on top of the whatever-the-heck-evil-cough-thing I have is. I shall spare you the details, but suffice it to say that food and I were not getting on at all. Water and I, as a matter of a fact, weren’t on speaking terms either.

I’m beginning to wonder if we are, indeed, the House of Plague. Maybe I should get a sign for the door that says “Abandon all Health Ye Who Enter Here.”

But to talk of better things…

I suppose I should mention the Wedding. And you have to capitalize it because it’s that BIG a deal. It was literally a holiday here and I have to think they planned it that way since it gave everyone here a four day weekend (with May Day) and it followed another four day weekend (Easter). You can literally buy *anything* emblazoned with the smiling faces of Prince William and (now) Princess Catherine / Kate.

We did not attend the wedding.

We did not go NEAR the wedding.

I mean, seriously. Did you see the TV coverage? Did you see how many people were there? Some of them having camped out for DAYS?

No, we watched it on TV just like half of the world did. I honestly felt a bit silly watching it, but it *was* a historic occasion. And then we went out to Bel Canto for dinner where the wait staff serenade you with opera.

Not kidding.

It was great. The Max enjoyed it too. Here he is toasting with Katya, one of the singers.

Bel CantoBut wait. I promised you cute little boy(s), right? Can’t resist posting one more picture of The Max…

He’s just killing me with the cute.

I think he’s probably enjoying me being sick in a way. Today he got to watch two movies and then he got to eat two popsicles. In a row. And then another one after dinner.

Yeah, I’m that mom when I’m sick.

In other news, I think we’re (and when I say “we” I really mean “The Max”) making some good progress on the potty training front. In the last five days he’s only had one accident and that one wasn’t really his fault. So, YAY!

It’s the little things in life.

He was actually doing really great with it all before we moved, but moving really disrupted…well, everything. I know how the little man feels. So I’m really proud of him.

Potty training also makes for some really interesting conversations, but I’ll spare you those.

Trust me on this one.

Anyway, news on the new book…AKA the Sekrit Project (you know, I know it’s all Internet Cools and All but it kind of kills me a little bit inside whenever I misspell something on purpose…and yet I keep doing it. Hm.)

I’ve got 10 chapters done and also a full synopsis. I had to stop and step back and do one after all. Wasn’t planning on it, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I’m really liking it. Kinda scary. I keep thinking it’s going to go wrong somewhere, but so far it isn’t (or, at least, I don’t think it is…). I’d taken a brief break to look at some other stuff (and the whole, you know, puking my guts up thing) and am anxious to get back to it. Have twiddled with the chapters that are already done too…something I usually try not to do until I’m all the way through a first draft. Yah, breaking the rules all over the place.

My soundtrack for this book includes Tom Waits, Chris Isaak, K. T. Tunstall, Norah Jones, Nina Simone, Ani DiFranco, Cowboy Junkies, Leonard Cohen, Paula Cole and Christina Aguilera. So far. I seem to be expanding it every day. There might be a really long playlist for this one. I welcome your suggestions (nothing fast paced, ethereal is good, plaintive is okay, heavy on the female side of things).

Oh, and I finally also finished writing up my Dear Teen Me letter. It’ll be going up later this month. Ulp.

On Still Sucks to Be Me in Spanish, Nebraskans, and Piracy

Hey everyone! I’m back home again after traveling to the wilds of, er…Omaha for a library visit (or two) with the awesome people there. Gordon and Lindsey were the two librarians who won a visit from me as part of the Sill Sucks to Be Me launch contest. I had a great time seeing the sites (like Old Town and the Henry Doorly Zoo) and we even took The Max to his very first hockey game (the Lancers, who, sadly, didn’t win). And, of course, the visits with the teens (and adults) who came out to see me was pure awesome too.

On Friday, I hung out with a bunch of teens and Gordon & Lindsey at the Bellevue Library and we all made a felt batty!! That was Gordon’s idea (he’s crafty!) and it was SO much fun. The Max (and the hubster) even got involved. The Max, in fact, made an entire army of bats AND had his first experience using scissors.

Making Bats (should've taken this pic before ppl started to leave, so this shot is missing some of the awesome bats)

On Saturday, I did the main author visit. I talked (for prolly too long), did Q&A kind of stuff, a writing workshop, and signed books. Everyone was great and we all (I think) had a lot of fun coming up with a new story (involving blue-haired mermen and a search for a long-lost parent) as part of the exercise. I hope everyone had as good of a time as I did.

On Still Sucks to Be Me in Spanish!

Now, in other news, it seems that Still Sucks to Be Me is nearly here in the Spanish version! Looks like it is coming out on November 9th! Looks also like they changed the name up a bit to just Más Confesiones de Mina Smith (Vampiro Adolescente). And the cover is radically different than the first Spanish cover (Ser yo es un asco). Check it out…

Book 2 Spanish CoverI have to admit that my first reaction was pretty much just “Whoa!” and “Dude!” It’s just SO different. It’s cool and kind of reminds me of a Beautiful Creatures type of thing. What do you think? The only qualm I have is that it doesn’t look like a funny book. So I hope people don’t pick it up and then get a shock. Anyway, I can’t wait to see it in person!

On Piracy

And in final news…I actually got a nasty shock today. I’m signed up for Google Alerts (as are all authors, I’d wager) and got one this morning. I clicked through and found a download site with an illegal copy of Still Sucks to Be Me on it. This isn’t, honestly, that unusual (as depressing as that is) but what made this one particularly horrifying is that it showed the download count and OVER 20,000 COPIES HAD BEEN DOWNLOADED. On just this ONE website. And I know that it’s also out there on other sites. How many more pirated copies are out there?

I could cry.

To put that in perspective, the initial print run of Sucks to Be Me was around 20,000 copies. Actually, let me put this even more in perspective for you…my first statement for Still Sucks didn’t have 20,000 sales on it. I haven’t gotten my next statement yet (though I should soon–I get statements 4 times a year, unlike many authors who get them only twice or even just once), but it could conceivably be LESS than the number of copies that have been illegally downloaded (though I do hope it’s more!). I am not (at this time, though I certainly have aspirations) a NYT Bestselling Author. I do not sell millions of books. Every one of those pirated copies directly hurts me.

If those 20,000 people had actually bought my book I could just about guarantee you that I would be sitting here actually writing book #3 rather than waiting to see if my publisher will want it or not (note: I am not remotely upset with my publisher that I am still waiting to hear on whether they want book #3 or not. I know that this is a business. I know that the economy is tough. I know my editor would love to work with me on it. They just have to see if they are able to.).

So not only have those people potentially stolen a bunch of income from ME, they are also stealing from YOU. All of my awesome, incredibly wonderful fans (many of whom email me every week to ask when the third book will be out) may not get a third book. It won’t be because I didn’t want to write it.

Like I said, I could cry.

I know that there have been arguments made that people who illegally download a book aren’t the kind of people who would actually purchase one anyway, so it’s not “really” hurting authors. Well, maybe those people would have borrowed it from a library in times past, in which case, it would still be helping me rather than hurting me. And maybe some of them actually would have bought it. If even 10% of them had bought it instead of stolen it, it would have helped me out.

And I know I’ve been told that it’s useless to bother posting about this stuff (in fact, some people say you should just keep quiet), but my (probably naive) hope is that just one person may change their mind about illegally downloading something.

I can hope.

EDIT: Found this great post from another author of the costs of piracy to both authors and readers. Read it.

Ze random…it haz me.

I kind of miss being odd and random. Before I was all official-y and published-y, I had a blog I called Blerg (which I’ve mostly imported in over here, so if you read through old old old posts you’ll see) and I just wrote about pretty much whatever. Whenever. Sometimes multiple times a day, sometimes once a week, sometimes once a month. Poetry (both bad and good), restaurant reviews, notes to myself, whatever happened that day, whatever bee had crawled up in my bonnet…just whatever.

I don’t really do that anymore. I’ve tried to be more professional and just talk mostly about writer-ly things here.

I’m kinda bored with that.

And I don’t tend to post as much, either, since now I’m always trying to think up something that means something or is useful (ha, ha, it is to laugh) and heaven knows we all know how hard that is.

So I think I’m going to be a little bit more me around here. Just to warn you. In case you pop in one day and read a post and go Huh?

There will probably be a lot of parentheses involved. And more than a few ellipses. And italics. But you might have noticed that already.

In general life news, my older sister and her son went home today. They’d been visiting for a week and it was interesting to be hanging around with a fifteen year old boy for that long. Just sayin’. My sister’s other kids are girls (17 and 11) and I don’t think she’s quite mentally prepared for having a teenage boy. (is anyone?) She wants him to talk about stuff. Like feelings. All the time. The Max is only two, but I already know that isn’t going to fly when he’s fifteen. But I think I’m kind of a weird adult. I actually remember a lot about what it felt like to be a teenager. Which is maybe why I write for them (wow. did you see that? totally made a point that probably actually belongs on this blog.).

"Fast Thumbs" Ryan, My sis Lisa, The Max, The Hubster & Me -- Note that Lisa got the height in the family.

We had a good time though, Ryan’s texting addiction aside. We hit all the big Chicago stuff since they’d never been here before. Even did some stuff I hadn’t done before, like the Water Taxi on the Chicago river. I did learn that The Max has no issue whatsoever with heights yet. He walked right out onto the Plexiglas room (or whatever it’s made of) at the Sears Tower (technically the Willis tower now, but I refuse to call it that) on the 103 floor with no problem.

Introducing the “Real” Cameron

Visiting Brookfield Zoo with Cam

So, I’d like all of you to meet my nephew, Cameron, who let me borrow his name for Still Sucks to Be Me (for a very important character, no less). Cam is my husband’s sister’s middle child. I was a middle child myself. He’s got an older brother named Christian and a younger sister named Kylie. (For the record, my older sister is Lisa and my younger sister is Pam).

The character of Cameron in the book is, of course, older than Cameron my nephew. And his hair color is a little different and, well, Cameron (the original) isn’t a vampire so far as I know. They are both super cute though! Just ask all the girls in my neighborhood who suddenly started hanging out by my house when Cameron came to visit!

The Max LOVES all of his cousins, but is especially fond of Cameron. He still talks about playing with him when he sees pictures. Of course, that would partly be because he LOVES playing in water. This picture was when we were all in downtown Chicago at the famous fountain in Millennium Park.

The Max, Nana, & Cameron

I was thinking it would be cool to interview Cam to see what he thinks of having a character in a book named after him and I was wondering if you guys had any questions for him too?

Here’s the questions I’ve got so far:

  • Is it weird to see your name in a book? Especially knowing the character was named after you?
  • Can you tell my readers a little about the “REAL” Cameron?
  • What are your favorite hobbies?
  • What’s your favorite book?
  • Who’s your favorite band?

Post more! If I think of some more, I’ll add them too, and then I’ll send them off to the “real” Cameron.
