Cat Girl T-Shirts

What will the tshirts say?Okay. Guys. Guys. I need help with the t-shirt slogans. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far. All of them will say “Cat Girl’s Day Off” somewhere and probably either a QR code (would that work on a t-shirt or would it be weird?) or a URL plus a picture of a cat (maybe a silhouette of a cat or the cat from the cover).

  • When the kitty litter hits the fan, get out of the way.
  • What pink cat?
  • Rufus Brutus the Third does not approve.
(this one would definitely use the Rufus picture from the front of the book or a similar picture of a Scottish Fold cat)
  • Never trust a cat.
  • When the kitty litter hits the fan, humans get out of the way.

Suggestions from Comments:

  • Bow Down to Your Kitty Leader (Linda)
  • Cats Rule the World (Linda)
  • Catastic (Linda)
  • Curiousity Won’t Kill This Cat (Christina)
  • Cat’s Really Do Make All the Difference (Christina)
  • Rufus Brutus the Third Approves (Christina) — with a paw print of approval
  • Frick on a Stick (Diana)

Any other ideas? What’s your vote? Potentially there could be a few designs (kinda like the Sucks to Be Me shirts). And if YOU suggest a new slogan that everyone loves then YOU get a free shirt. So put on your thinking caps!

PS If you want to know more about the book, you can find out here (it might help you come up with something). Oh, and here’s the cover if you haven’t seen it:

And here’s kinda the style I’m thinking for some of them:

Yo, Librarians! I love you like a cat loves tuna.

Librarians Rule!Okay, if you’ve known me for any length of time you know that I seriously dig librarians. I love ‘em. They were kind to me when I was a kid (allowing me to check out WAY more books at a time than I was allowed at one time), they were kind to me when my first book came out (love you, ALA attendees!), and they’ve been just wonderful and supportive.

So I like to give back.

Librarians, if you order a copy of Cat Girl’s Day Off for your library (or one is ordered because of you…not really sure how these things work), let me know. I’ll give you your choice of:

  1. A half hour Skype visit wherein I’ll talk to you (if that’s whatcha want) or a group of library patrons. Can be a Q&A session or “What it’s like to be a writer” or just a friendly chat. I’m open! (Check out what librarians have had to say about previous Skype visits I’ve done)
  2. A t-shirt to give away (or keep…yanno, whatever)
  3. A one month email writing mentorship of one of your library teens
  4. A big ‘ol packet of book swag.
  5. Or…? This is a squeaky shiny new idea so I’d love suggestions. As a librarian, what would YOU want?

This is open to any library anywhere in the world. Suggestions, ideas, notifications that you want to take me up on it…just email me at kim@kimberlypauley.com!

All the ways to win (or buy)…Cat Girl’s Day Off!

So. It’s here.  YOU can actually go and BUY the book. RIGHT NOW.

I’ll wait right here.

In all seriousness, I am super excited that the time has finally come. CAT GIRL is out there in the world. People are reading it. People I’ve never ever met are laughing at silly cat jokes because of me. That makes me inordinately happy.

I do hope you’ll go out and buy a copy for yourself. Or a friend. Or that lady down the street with all the cats that kind of freaks you out a little because she’s always muttering about how she needs to buy more tuna and she smells kind of funny. She could probably use a good laugh.

And if you do buy a copy), remember that I’ll send you a letter and a signed bookplate (no, I’m not kidding). If you don’t see the book in your local store on the shelf, please ask them to order it (especially since B&N isn’t stocking it by default and Borders doesn’t even exist anymore). I will seriously love you forever (still not kidding). In fact, hey, are you a bookseller? Let me know if you carry any of my books in your store and I will be OVERJOYED to send you signed bookplates and swag. Anywhere in the world. For reals.

And I’ve got a special deal for librarians too (check it out)!

You can buy Cat Girl’s Day Off online too, of course: directly from Lee & Low | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound (find a local store!) and for international folks (of which I am one) there’s always the lovely Book Depository (FREE worldwide shipping!)! For ebook-ish people, there’s Amazon Kindle | Barnes & Noble Nook | iTunes | Google eBookstore

Sneak Peek: Movie Scene from “Freddy’s Day Off”

This continues the series of behind the scenes posts for Cat Girl’s Day Off. Freddy’s Day Off is the name of the movie being filmed at Nat’s high school. Besides appearing as an extra, she and her friends crash movie sets at Wrigley Field. I wrote out two scenes of the movie for the book, but wound up only using one of them (though this one is indirectly referenced). It takes place in the cafeteria of Nat’s high school. Ty McKenzie plays Freddy Barnes and Victoria Welling plays Molly. The movie (kinda obviously) is about a teenage guy that wants to change his life and figures the best way to do it is to emulate Ferris Bueller.

Don’t forget to check out all the Sneak Peeks!

FADE IN:

CAFETERIA SCENE

High school cafeteria. Freddy and Molly are sitting at a cafeteria table with their trays in front of them.

FREDDY

I’m going to do it.

MOLLY

Do what?

Trina and Rose, two pretty girls, walk by the table behind Freddy to go sit at another table filled with the popular crowd. Freddy turns to look at them, then leans over to look intently into Molly’s eyes.

FREDDY

Do something about my life, that’s what!

Trina is never going to notice me. No one is ever going to notice me. Unless I do something. Something big.

MOLLY

Like what?

FREDDY

Remember that old movie we watched last weekend? The one about Ferris Bueller?

MOLLY

Yeah?

FREDDY

That’s what I’m going to do.

MOLLY

Skip school?

FREDDY

No! I mean, yes. But not just skip school. I want to be Ferris.

MOLLY

You want to be in a movie?

FREDDY

No, that’s not what I mean. I mean I want to be like Ferris. You do realize that movie was filmed in this school, right? In this very school?

MOLLY

Yeah. So? So was part of The Breakfast Club. Wasn’t that film by the same guy? You want to get sent to detention too?

FREDDY

Molly, you’re not getting it. Of course I don’t want to get detention.

MOLLY

You just said you want to skip school. What do you think that will get you?

FREDDY

(sighs) Okay, it might wind up with me in detention. But it’ll be worth it. I’m going to do everything that Ferris did. Everything.

MOLLY

You have a friend somewhere I don’t know about that owns a Ferrari you can destroy?

FREDDY

No! Molly! Just…you know, everything else. All the good stuff. Like the museum and crashing that fancy restaurant.

MOLLY

Oh, yeah, skipping school to go to a museum is sure to get you noticed by Trina. You’re such a bad boy, Freddy.

Molly stands up and picks up her tray and Freddy follows suit. They carry their trays to the window to turn them in.

FREDDY

You’re totally missing the point, Molly. Come on, this is going to be awesome. Tomorrow could be the best day of my entire life.

MOLLY

You’re going to skip tomorrow? Don’t we have a test in Chem?

FREDDY

Forget Chemistry. This is more important. I want you to come with me, Molly.

Molly pauses.

MOLLY

You want me to come with you? Like that girl in the movie? Sloan or whatever her name was? Ferris’s girl friend?

FREDDY

Yeah, kind of. I mean, you’re my best friend. Ferris took his two best friends with him. It wouldn’t be right if I just went by myself.

MOLLY

Right.

FREDDY

And, um, do you think you could borrow your dad’s car?

Publisher’s Weekly review! Yay!

It’s so incredibly nerve-wracking (but also exciting) in the month or so before a book comes out. The reviews start to roll in and the nail-biting commences. The Google Alerts start appearing in your inbox, causing your heart to palpitate just a bit each time you check your email.

That’s how I came across this review of Cat Girl’s Day Off from Publisher’s Weekly:

“I was a freak from a family of freaks.” High school sophomore Natalie “Nat” Ng has a “Talent” she’s not proud of: the ability to talk to cats. Her younger sister is a “supergenius” with chameleonlike abilities; her older sister is proficient in truth divination and levitation, and has X-ray vision; and her parents work for the Bureau of Extrasensory Regulation and Management. When a film crew comes to Nat’s Chicago high school to shoot a takeoff of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off things get fishy: the female star isn’t acting like herself, and Nat learns from a cat that celebrity blogger Easton West may not be who she claims to be. Along with her friends Oscar and Melly, Nat gets dragged into a whirlwind adventure to find out what happened to the real Easton. Pauley (Still Sucks to Be Me) offers amusing insights into the minds of cats, snappy dialogue, and a fast-paced plot. Readers should easily relate to Nat, and cat-lovers in particular will find a lot to enjoy in this romp. Ages 12–up.

So….yay! Kirkus AND Publisher’s Weekly like it!

You will too. Really. I promise. And remember, if you pre-order or buy it the first week, I’ll send YOU a personal letter and a signed bookplate. So, um, get on that, wouldja? I’m starting to work on those requests now and I’d love to be able to mail some of them while we’re visiting the US later this month instead of mailing them from here…(postage…it’s a killer).

Kirkus and something special for Pre-Orders & First Week-ers.

Oh. My.

Firstly…I am SO super excited and SO completely overwhelmed that Kirkus Reviews actually really liked Cat Girl’s Day Off. I probably shouldn’t admit that, but I am (they are, after all, known for their snark and as much as I love snark, I don’t so much love it if it’s directed at something I wrote). But…LOOK (!):

“Natalie Ng, gifted with the Talent of being able to communicate with cats, embarks on an impetuous adventure as a movie riffing off film classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is filmed at her Chicago-area high school.

Natalie comes from a Talented family, but her two sisters and her parents all possess high-grade Talents such as blending like a chameleon, knowing when people are lying or having an ultrasensitive sense of smell. Still, Nat’s unique ability to understand cats means she’s the only one to hear celebrity blogger Easton’s cat screaming for help because his owner has been kidnapped and replaced with a look-alike. Since there’s no one else ready and able to rescue Easton, Nat and her pair of slightly off-beat friends take on the job. This leads to one perilous situation after another, many of them featuring the italicized thoughts—appropriately laconic and snarky—of the various cats that Nat seeks out for help. Her bumpy budding romance with classmate Ian adds an amusing love interest to the mix. The fantasy elements, solidly grounded in an otherwise real world, seem ever-so-believable. Lively conversation, strong characterizations and a fast pace make this a breezy read. The funny feline thoughts are catnip for the audience.

A worthwhile adventure and an easy sell for feline fanciers who already know what their pets are saying.”

I could hyperventilate. Seriously. So excited. Did I say that already? Um, yeah. Add that to the lovely blurbs I got from Alex Flinn and Saundra Mitchell and I’m just really, really happy. NOW…if people’ll just buy the book (so I can write more) I will be even MORE excited (not sure that’s possible, honestly).

In all seriousness, if you are planning to buy the book and can buy it the first week it’s released or pre-order it, I will be positively overjoyed. First week/month sales are absolutely KEY to a book’s long-term success these days. Please, pretty please, if you don’t see it in your local store…ask for it. I will kiss you when I meet you. Okay, maybe I’ll just give you a hug or, if you’re opposed to inappropriate physical contact with more-or-less total strangers, I’ll just jump up and down and squeal.

You know what? Anyone who pre-orders the book (online or off) OR buys it the first week and sends me proof (email receipt or photo or whatever to kim at kimberlypauley dot com plus your name/address), I will send you a signed, personalized bookplate and a personal letter (heck, if you have a question about the book or for a particular character, I’ll write you a response to it) plus some Sucks to Be Me book swag. I’m no John Green (but who is? Well, other than John Green himself.) and I can’t sign books ahead of time (especially when they’re somewhere in the US and I’m over here in the UK), but I can do this. Heck, I’ll even write you a poem if you want. Just for you.

Because you know I love you guys.

Maybe not as much as I love Kirkus right now…no, wait, I love you guys more (don’t tell Kirkus).

P.S. I know this is kind of an insane idea. What if thousands of you take me up on this and I’m writing letters until next year? Well, you know what? That’s okay with me. I can lay in a supply of stationery and Sharpies.

P.P.S. Yes, this is open internationally.

Sneak Peek: Easton West

This continues the series of behind the scenes posts for Cat Girl’s Day Off (coming in April!). Easton West is a celebrity blogger (think Paris Hilton combined with Perez Hilton but with pink hair and pink stilettos, a pet cat named Tiddlywinks/Rufus and a dog named Fergie, both also dyed pink). She, uh, kinda has a thing for pink.

Don’t forget to check out all the Sneak Peeks!

Easton West

Sim Easton West (maybe she's not smiling because she was kidnapped...)

Name: Easton West

Age: A lady never tells and a gentleman never asks

Height: 5′ 7″

Build: Attractively built, if I do say so myself, little poppets

Talent: Digging out the news and dishing it up

Hair: cotton candy pink with hot pink highlights

Eyes: light blue

Ethnicity: Oh, standard American mix of every kind of European, I suppose

A Brief Interview:

Can you describe yourself in one word?

Oh, sweetie, a word that good hasn’t been invented yet.

I understand you have two pets and you take them everywhere with you.

Oh yes! I love my little Fergie-kins and my darling Tiddlywinks! Let me tell you, my little poppet, in this business, people can be so hard. But my furry babies are always there for me. I’d trust them with my life.

Can you tell us a bit about what you do?

What I do? Whatever I want! (laughs)

Seriously, don’t let the fingernails fool you. I take my blogging seriously. And when I talk…er, blog…people listen. They know I can get the inside scoop on anyone.

Sneak Peek X Three: Meep, Rufus, and Purr Daddy

Here’s another installment in the behind the scenes sneak peeks for Cat Girl’s Day Off. Today I’m gonna tell you about the three main cats. There’s more, of course, but these are the three main cats you get to hear from.

Meep is Nat’s cat and, in a lot of ways, her first friend. She’s had Meep since she was really young. Meep is a special cat — she’s a genetically modified hypoallergenic cat (you know, for people with severe cat allergies, which Nat’s mom has). That means she’s also a really expensive kind of cat (I’ve based her loosely on the hypoallergenic cats available from companies like “Lifestyle Pets“). This is about what I imagine she looks like:

Meep Cat

Meep!

If I’d really thought about her name before she became “Meep” to me, I’d have named her Pixel (bonus to you if you can figure out why), but once I started calling her Meep, the name stuck. Meep’s cat name and human name are the same since Nat just used the name that Meep gave her when she asked. Even kittens are very opinionated on what their names are.

Cat Girl's Day OffNow, Rufus Brutus the Third aka Tiddlywinks (his human name given him by Easton West) is a cat of another color. Literally. He’s the cat on the cover of the book and yes, he is indeed pink. He’s a Scottish Fold cat which gives him a different kind of look — small, flattened ears, a roundish-face, and kind of buggy eyes.

He’s pampered, spoiled, and very opinionated. You know, a cat.

Since he’s the favorite pet of a rich and famous celebrity blogger he’s never experienced anything more taxing than…well, okay, he’s never before experienced any trouble. He’s always gotten his own way. So when the kitty litter hits the fan, it really gets his dander up.

He’s the cat that Nat sees in the online video that starts off the whole wild madcap caper and, to be honest, they don’t really hit it off in the beginning. But by the end, they’ve come to respect each other.

Harley

Harley / PD

Lastly, there’s Purr Daddy aka PD aka Pebbles (his human name). He’s Ian Abbot‘s cat and one of my favorite characters in the book. I have no idea how he came to be named PD (yeah, I know, if I don’t know who does?), but he’s always been that in my head. He’s actually the first cat I came up with. The first chapter of the book that I wrote is one where Nat is at Ian’s house (though she was named Kathryn/Kat then and he was called Nick) and PD figures large in it.

I love PD.

Originally he was going to be a calico, but most calicos are female, so he got changed to orange and white, which actually works out really well because my old cat Harley was orange and white. Harley died a few years ago (um, three-ish, back when we lived in Chicago) and I still miss him. One of my most favorite cats ever, though I’ve loved all of my cats. So PD looks like Harley. The picture here is the very last picture taken of Harley (day before he died). Just like PD, he had lots of attitude and a bit of a preoccupation with his nether regions.

If you have any questions for the cats, post ‘em here and I’ll have ‘em answer.

Sneak Peek: Melly Zinsz

This continues the series of behind the scenes posts for Cat Girl’s Day Off (coming in Spring 2012!). Melly is one of Nat’s best friends, along with Oscar. Melly’s name came from two different sources…one: a long time ago, a fan of the Sucks to Be Me books had written me an email asking me to name a character after her best friend because her best friend was really sick. Her friend’s name was Melly. And two: I have two lovely nieces with the last name Zinszer.

Don’t forget to check out all the Sneak Peeks!

Melly

This was as close as I could get it with the Sim

Name: Melly Zinsz

Age: 16

Height: Not quite tall enough, but not too bad. Taller than Natalie Portman but shorter than Charlize Theron.

Build: Slim, I guess.

Talent: Acting

Hair: Light brown with some golden highlights

Eyes: Hazel

Ethnicity: Little bit of everything, but mostly German and Norwegian, I think.

Grade: Sophomore

Best Subject: Drama

Best Friends: Nat Ng and Oscar Green

Melly

No idea who this RL girl is, but she'd make a good Melly!

A Brief Interview:

Can you describe yourself in one word?

One word? That’s kind of hard. What do other people usually say? Like, describe how you look in one word? Or more like how you are? I mean, people say I’m pretty, but I don’t want that to define who I am. Even if I do want to be an actress. I don’t have to be just a pretty face, right?

Um, well, how would your friend Oscar describe you?

Oscar? (thinks) Melli-licious.

Right, then. Okay, you said you want to be an actress. Doesn’t everyone?

(laughs) Not my friend Nat! But, yeah, I guess a lot of people do. But I’m going to do it. I’m learning everything I can about it. Studying. I go to the theater, take acting lessons, have a vocal coach…I’m serious. What I really want to do is get into movies and then, when I’m old, do some stage work. Broadway. I’ve done some stage around here, but mostly just high school and community theater stuff.

Sounds like you’re pretty focused.

You have to be! There’s so much competition! You’ve got to be serious about your craft. Any advantage you get, you have to take it!

Quotealicious

So. I had this crazy idea that didn’t seem like a crazy idea at the time of having a quote about cats at the start of every chapter in Cat Girl’s Day Off (behind the scenes glimpse: my working title for the book was Cat Girl Saves the Day, so if you ever hear me say that or see me type that without thinking, that’s why…my brain still thinks that half the time).

It sounds reasonable, doesn’t it? And cute? I mean, look up “quotes about cats” on Google and you’ll get TONS.

Well.

Reasonable until you have to start tracking down permissions for them for your publisher. There are 36 chapters in CAT GIRL. Some of the quotes are from characters in the book, but a lot of them aren’t. The best ones are from some of my fav people.

And I am happy to report that some quotes from Robert A. Heinlein are IN the book! Favorite. Author. Of. All. Time. I know people ask me that question all the time (who’s your favorite author, huh, huh??) and I’ve often hemmed and hawed about the answer. BUT. If you want to know which author I own the most books of, which author I have read more than any other, which author I SO wanted to meet when I was growing up (other than Douglas Adams), it is, by far, Robert Heinlein. And he had quite a bit to say about cats, lucky me.

And a really great quote from Paula Poundstone (SUCH a funny lady) is going in too! Woot! Still waiting to hear back from Garrison Keillor and George Will. Sadly, an Erma Bombeck quote is not going in. Ah, well. There are so many that are going in, however, that I’m super excited. Dan Greenburg, Stephen Baker, Maurice Burton, Mark Twain…

Stay tuned…I’ll be posting a behind the scenes sneak peek of another character soon! Actually, you wanna vote? Should I post one of Melly (a best friend of Nat’s) or Easton (a celebrity blogger)?

Cats & Blogs: What the Cat Read ( @LdySkyfire )

This is the first in a continuing series of posts about book bloggers and the cats they love. Or tolerate, depending. In Cat Girl’s Day Off, my main character Natalie can talk to cats (not that she always wants to). If you’re a book blogger and you’re owned by a cat (or more than one cat), send me an email if you’d like to be featured!

What the Cat Read: Three cats reviewing the books they love!

Because you know that the cats in bookstores and libraries have way more to say than they let on when we are around, What the Cat Read puts a new spin on the book review by offering it up from the perspective of our purrrfect feline friends. Maintained by Willow, Sara, Buggy, and human Cameron Yeager!

How long has it been since your first cat owned you?
My first cat, Midnight, found me in 1991 when I was 11 years old. She was a 9 month old shelter kitten and she provided years of love and affection until her passing in October of 2007. I couldn’t have asked for a better first time feline owner.

Tell me about your cats.
The current felines in my life are Willow (WillowWisp), Sara (Sarabear), and Buggy (Little Bug). However, instead of my telling you about them, I think it might be easier to let them do the talking. =^-^=

Willow – “I’m a Silver Tabby-Siamese mix and yes my eyes are crossed. Gotta problem with that? I love getting into mischief. If a door is closed, I want to know what is on the other side. If my humans are late in feeding me, I have no problems making my displeasure known by knocking things off shelves or smacking their face with my tail. In fact, my antics over the years earned me the nickname of “Cross-eyed Demon Child” and I proudly live up to it daily.”

Sara – “Murrr! I always say that when I’m happy. And since I’m always happy, I say it all the time. Murrr! When I was younger, a wild animal viciously attacked me and as a result, I have difficulty seeing out of my right eye. But that doesn’t stop me from enjoying my life to the fullest. Every day I play chase with my cousin Inari around the house, and though it upsets the two old biddies, I don’t care. I’m having fun! My favorite game to play with my human is “Spin the Kitty” and boy do I get dizzy. Murrr!”

Buggy – “My name may be Little Bug, but I’m far from little. As the oldest of the felines in the house, I don’t put up with any kind of nonsense. The humans may think that they are in charge of everything around here, but if they only knew how tightly I have them wrapped around my little paws, especially at mealtime. When all is said and done, I AM a feline equivalent of a Red Hat Society member. Female: Check (and Calico), Over 50: Check (10+ years old, you do the math), & Attitude: Heck ya! Just ask the dog. I like to spend my day’s lounging on the bed with a good book, basking in the sun, and getting in plenty of lap time with my humans. Oh, and did I mention I like hats?”

If they could read (I’m not saying they can’t), what do you think their favorite books would be?
As Willow said, she loves getting into mischief. As a result, she is very much a mystery novel lover. She currently is reading Lilian Jackson Braun’s “Cat Who” series. Her favorite series though is Carole Nelson Douglas’s Midnight Louie Mysteries. She’s got a serious soft spot for that street cat!  Sara, being the youngest of the three, is really into the Young Adult and Fantasy genres. She really enjoys reading Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series and the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling.  Buggy is more into the Classics. Her author of choice is Jane Austen and her favorite book is Sense and Sensibility by, whom else, Jane Austen.

If you could ask your cat(s) anything, what would you ask?
Why they feel it is necessary to try and trip me whenever I walk up and down the stairs?  Actually, I don’t really know what questions I would ask of them.

What do you think the answer would be?
Willow – “If we told you the reason why we try to trip you on the stairs then our plans for world domination would be at risk.”

And here’s Cameron and all her furry companions:

P.S. Cameron, I can tell you the real reason why they try to trip you on the stairs. Because they can.
